Empowering Local Governance: The Role of Consulting Engineers
We actively participated in the Institute for Local Government Management (iLGM) Conference 2024, held at the Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani Hotel in Durban from 19 to 20 September. This year’s theme, “Attractive Towns and Cities: Making a Difference,” guided key discussions on the future of local governance. Our Stakeholder Liaison Manager, Godfrey Ramalisa, delivered an insightful presentation titled “The Role of Consulting Engineers and the Impact of Effective Procurement, Design, Execution, and Maintenance.”
His presentation emphasised the critical role that engineering consultants play in the successful execution of infrastructure projects, highlighting how their specialised knowledge ensures that these projects are not only designed and implemented effectively but are also maintained to high standards. Ramalisa stressed the importance of engaging reputable engineering firms with professional credentials and relevant experience to ensure the selection of qualified construction companies. Furthermore, he examined the consequences of poor procurement practices, which can lead to cost overruns, delays, and even legal disputes. By advocating for sound procurement policies and practices, he underscored the need for collaboration among stakeholders to ensure quality outcomes that are delivered on time and within budget.
The conference also served as a valuable networking opportunity, allowing participants to engage with various stakeholders, share best practices, and foster relationships that can drive collaborative efforts in the engineering sector.
