CESA Indaba

Highlights from the CEO

Neresh Pather CESA Presidential Media Breakfast 31 January 2019 - Consulting Engineers South Africa's (CESA) President, Neresh Pather, presented his presidential message and theme for the year at a function held in Johannesburg. Pather's 2019 theme is 'Reshaping our Future Together' focusing on changing social norms by 'Doing what is Right!' Pather strongly believes that collectively the industry needs to address the issue of the importance of engineers as well as focus on creating the right narrative to be able to attract young engineers into the Built Environment and infrastructure space to make sure that sustainability and relevance is ensured.
CESA represents close to 560-member firms employing over 21 000 people. Through its focus on quality and the credibility it has created with various client organisations it represents the hallmark of competence, integrity, and quality in the consulting engineering industry. To access the presentation please visit our homepage at: http://www.cesa.co.za

BUSA  BUSA Economic Indaba 29 January 2019 - Strategic dialogue for a transformed and inclusive economy.  CESA CEO, President and Deputy President attended the BUSA Economic Indaba which was attended by at least five Ministers in the Ramaphosa cabinet.  Business leaders addressed the partnership between Government and Business taking root.  Inevitably topics under discussion included the governance challenges in State-Owned Entities (SOEs), the crisis confronting Eskom, deepening unemployment and inequality, rising government debt levels, and the impending wave of disruption that will be brought by the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR).  President Ramaphosa acknowledged the role played by CESA in developing SME's in our sector.
Indaba  CESA Infrastructure Indaba 6 - 7 March 2019 - The CESA Infrastructure Indaba is being held on the 6th and 7th March 2019 at the Durban ICC.  This two-day conference will bring together leading experts including government officials, consulting engineers and built environment professionals to promote improved service delivery and management of public infrastructure, as well as providing networking opportunities. CESA Directorate - We are pleased to announce that Ms Brenda Lacey-Smith, who previously managed the School of Consulting Engineering, has rejoined the CESA Directorate as the Education and Training Manager.  I am sure that Brenda will add value to the team and we wish her a warm welcome.

BECS Survey (July 2018 - December 2018) - It would be remiss of me not to share the disappointing response we recently received from members on this survey. With a membership of close to 560, we received the lowest response ever, namely less than 10%, which is really a concern. Whilst some find it useful as it contains elements of benchmarking and market segmentation, there are some who unfortunately are dismissive of this value and simply do not participate. Whereas one understands that it may be onerous and the timing may not be ideal, we have tried to minimise the time it takes to complete the survey by shortening the one that comes out for the Jan to June cycle as it represents only elements sensitive to change over a six-month period. The July to December does contain all the elements at is takes into account elements that would change over a full 12-month period, so it becomes even more important that we get as many responses as possible. Much as some of our members believe it adds no direct value to their businesses, I would like them to reconsider the fact that the broader industry, client bodies and other industry associations related to ours, rely heavily on this survey, as we normally provide some leading indicators to both Contractors and Suppliers whilst we are able to provide some reflection on areas of concern to Clients,  so I would encourage all to consider the value more broadly than just what they perceive to be the quantifiable benefits to their own companies and please become more active participants in the CESA Family.
