Overview
The contents of this two-day course is of great interest to structural designers and contractors as the parties responsible for the design of concrete mixes and selection of materials is poorly defined. The course will discuss the most important properties of concrete from a practical structural perspective and assist attendees with the identification of the concrete requirements and their achievement in terms of the specification. Outcomes
On completion, you will be able to:
-
Foresee the requirements of the concrete material during the design stage and specify accordingly
-
Apply the expertise in the production of concrete to suit the requirements of a specification
-
Acquire skills in the identification of the cause of defects and the most probable consequences
-
Understanding the importance of constituent material selection and its effect on concrete properties
Program Outline
-
Selection of constituent materials to achieve concrete properties - aggregates, cement, elastic modulus, admixtures and water
-
Site processes on concrete - temperature, plastic shrinkage, batching, mixing, transport, placement, compaction
-
Processes in the green state - curing, finishing
-
Properties of concrete in the final hardened state - characteristic strength, statistical margin, testing in compression, flexural strength, elasticity & creep, abrasion resistance, drying shrinkage, durability
-
Formwork and falsework - design, effect of materials, effect of compaction, striking of formwork, care of formwork, types of formwork precautions
-
Common concrete defects that affect structural performance and their avoidance - different material interface, thermal cracking, moisture and thermal expansion and contraction, distribution steel, mechanical and chemical attack
-
Case studies workshop where different types of structure and the requirements of the concrete will be discussed between delegates
