About the BCE

If you are serious about a career in consulting engineering, then you should enrol for the CESA Business of Consulting Engineering (BCE) Development Programme. Likewise, if you are an employer of consulting engineers, you should be sending key staff members on the programme. Better still, consider attending yourself!

The programme focuses on developing non-technical skills, from project inception to project completion, essential for a career in consulting engineering, but not part of normal tertiary engineering education including the:

  • Project Delivery
  • Consulting Engineering Environment
  • Business and Project Finance
  • Legal and Contractual Matters
  • Inter-personal Skills

Programme Structure

CESA’s flagship one-year programme, entitled the Business of Consulting Engineering (BCE), develops future consulting engineers into industry leaders in the consulting engineering environment.

  • One afternoon online class per week, consisting of two or three lectures 
  • Over 60 topics presented by 15 Subject Matter Experts 
  • Access and use of the CESAnet student portal 
  • Individual student mentor support 
  • Training material, including the ‘Role of the Consulting Engineer during Project Delivery’ 
  • Individual feedback on assignments
  • Online exams at the end of the year

Curriculum

The BCE Development Programme offers the following modules:

  • Project Delivery
  • Consulting Engineering Environment (including Inter-personal Skills)
  • Business and Project Finance
  • Legal and Contractual Matters

Admission Requirements

There are specific requirements for any student to enroll in the BCE programme.

Applications from students who lack the above basic requirements will be considered, provided these are accompanied by a detailed written motivation from the applicant’s employer. Experience has proven that students without these requirements usually struggle.

The requirements for acceptance to the BCE training programme are:

  • BSc/BTech degree with 2 years’ postgraduate experience in a consulting engineering firm or
  • Technical Diploma with a minimum of 5 years’ post graduate experience in a consulting engineering firm and a letter of motivation from the employer
  • Relevant non–engineering qualifications with a minimum of 5 years’ post graduate experience in a consulting engineering firm and a letter of motivation from the employer.


* Students lacking the above requirements may apply, provided they provide a written motivation from their employer.
* Experience has proven that students without these requirements usually struggle and sometimes dropout.

Fees

Registration Fee – Register Online Before 13 December 2024:

  • R55 500.00 (excluding VAT)

Registration Fee – Register Online between 14 December 2024 and 31 January 2025:

  • R58 500.00 (excluding VAT)

Before you apply to the BCE programme, please note that you will need to commit to the following:

  • Permission from the organisation is granted before applying.
  • Have a dedicated Workplace Mentor – This can be the student’s supervisor or boss and in the case of an own business, another Consulting Engineer (Pr Eng or Pr Tech Eng) from another CESA member firm)
  • Attend weekly online classes via Zoom, consisting of two or three lectures
  • Complete and submit two or three assignments each week
  • Write final online exams at the end of the year
  • Pay all registration fees before the programme starts (no exceptions)
