Basic to Intermediate Excel - Microsoft Excel Level 1 & 2


This hands-on, practical, 2-day course will focus on the Excel skills that the typical Intermediate user would need. By applying the robust functionality that's built into Excel, it can help you organise, calculate, analyse, revise, update, and present your data in ways that will help the decision-makers and the individual steer the company in the right direction. Of course, knowing exactly how to ask Excel the questions that you need to be answered, which questions you can even ask, and how to interpret the answers. This course aims to provide you with the foundational Excel knowledge and skills necessary to begin that journey.

Why Should an Individual Attend?

All staff members, from receptionist through to the CEO should have at least a basic understanding of Excel, from compiling a call record, to analysing a Comprehensive Statement of Income, Excel can be utilised to facilitate the logging and manipulation of numbers at all levels in the organisation.

Excel has also become the de facto spreadsheet for use in business, so it follows that everyone in the company should at least be able to create and basically utilise spreadsheet capability.

Office staff, administrators, accounts staff, all will benefit from having at least the following skills:

  • Understanding what Excel is.
  • Being able to create and maintain basic spreadsheets
  • Have a basic understanding of the manipulating capabilities of Excel Spreadsheets
  • How to input basic formulas, basic protection of data
  • How and what the different aspects of a spreadsheet represent, e.g., the “ribbon line", “tabs”, icons, shortcuts, saving your work, etc.


Delegates will be able to apply their knowledge in terms of the following practical applications:

  • Understand the terminology of Excel –the “jargon”
  • Keyboard shortcuts
  • General, Editing, Navigating, Inserting, Highlighting
  • Understanding the ribbon line, the “tabs”, the icons
  • Understand the “layout “of the spreadsheet, and the concepts of Workbook, Worksheets, and the capacities of Excel
  • The individual functions within the “tabs”, viz: copy, paste, cut etc.
  • The hierarchical nature of Excel

Lesson 4: Formatting a Worksheet 

  • Apply Text Formats
  • Apply Number Formats
  • Align Cell Contents
  • Apply Styles and Themes
  • Apply Basic Conditional Formatting
  • Create and Use Templates

Lesson 5: Printing Workbooks 

  • Preview and Print a Workbook
  • Set Up the Page Layout
  • Configure Headers and Footers 

Lesson 6: Managing Workbooks

  • Manage Worksheets
  • Manage Workbook and Worksheet Views
  • Manage Workbook Properties 

Lesson 7: Customising Excel

  • Use and apply the Quick Access toolbar
  • Understand how to set the option via the “Back Stage “view
