CESA/SABTACO/SETA Join Forces to
Support the Development of Build
Environment Candidates in the Workplace
Built Environment Professionals are key to South Africa’s economic development and during 2013 SABTACO
and CESA entered into a partnership to secure funding from the Construction Education and Training Authority
(CETA) to support the development of their member organisations’ graduates in the workplace towards professional
registration.
The partnership was awarded funding for 150 candidacy programmes (at 50 employers) for the following Built
Environment Professions: Engineering, Architecture, Town Planning and Quantity Surveying.
The partnership developed a system called ‘MentAnet’ to provide guidance to the coordinators, mentors and
candidates in terms of the requirements of the four statutory councils as well as to upload their documentation
against these requirements.
Although most of the candidates are now only halfway through the programme, some have already registered with
their respective councils.
In order to inspire candidates on the programme, the partnership has decided to request the newly professional
registered candidates to share their experiences and advice. The first two candidate to be featured is Vishan
Ramnarian (Pr Techno) and Stacie Moorhead (PrQS):
Name: Vishan Ramnarian
Professional Title: Professional Engineering
Technologist (Pr Tech Eng)
Discipline: Mechanical
Age: 32
Company: WSP Group Africa (Pty) Ltd
What is the difference now that you are registered?
The confidence to make decisions more easily and trust my
judgement. With this responsibility, I also find myself becoming
more systematic in my approach which leads to higher levels of
accuracy.
How did SABTACO/CESA programme assist you?
By breaking the process down into small steps which are easier to
achieve and hence I was motivated to do it.
How did your mentor support & guide you during your
programme?
By simplifying the steps and breaking down the requirements for
me. By just watching how my superiors handle day to day activities
Vishan Ramnarian (WSP Group Africa) gives me perspective in the way I should aim to conduct myself.
Please provide the candidates on the programme with advice
Please do not give up. It may seem like a very tall mountain to climb, but just stick it out and persevere. It will be
well worth it.
Please provide the candidates on the programme with advice on applying for registration at the Council?
Read the questions carefully and answer only what is required. Also, let some of your personality shine through
in your answers. Too often we are afraid to express ourselves. Secondly, do not copy other people’s answers, be
unique.
