BEPEC was created in 2008 with the active support and participation of Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA), the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA), and the Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS). BEPEC use to be known as the International Business Development Section and was created in response to the globalisation of the consulting engineering sector after the first democratic elections in South Africa. With the inclusion of the Architect and the Quantity Surveying community the Export Council offers a one-stop-shop for international clients who are in the market to employ Built Environment Professionals.
BEPEC is a section 21 non-for-profit company who is in a public private partnership with the South African Department of Trade and Industry, who jointly support export ready firms to export their built environment services internationally.
A key advantage to partnering with South African Built Environment Professionals is that they are able to offer their world –renowned expertise and multi-disciplinary skills at competitive rates. What also makes them attractive to clients in Africa and beyond is that while the have an excellent understanding of the special needs of the developing world, the utilise first world processes and operate to its standards. They thus have the required skills and are well equipped to export their services not only to developing countries but also to the most developed nations of the world. If any illustration to their capacity is needed, the infrastructure of South Africa speaks for itself in terms of quality projects; there can be no doubt that South African Built Environment Professionals are comparable to the best in the world. The exporting of their services is further enhanced through a fantastic IT infrastructure in South Africa.
The quality assurance required by domestic and international clients are provided by the fact that only members of CESA, SAIA and ASAQS can belong to the Built Environment Professions Export Council. All these business support organisations only allow the most ethical and prestigious firms to be members of their organisations.
BEPEC activities include securing and funding of market access to clients internationally, as well as generating increased business opportunities by adding value to member firms’ international business development activities. BEPEC has a cross-sectorial and lateral thinking approach to developing new markets through an in-house database system to facilitate joint ventures, alliances and partnerships between Built Environment Professionals. This provides members with maximum economies of scale when working internationally again, to the benefit of clients.
BEPEC will also facilitate access to international development funding with, as a primary objective, the accessing or even creation of new sources of funding for the execution of projects in Africa and elsewhere. International funding institutions include the World Bank and the African Development Bank. The overall objective is to provide a clear pathway for accession various sources of funding, including the dti-based Capital Projects Feasibility Study Programme.
