2016 Gauteng Youth in Construction Expo to take place 7-11 March

YIC has grown to a well-recognized successful exhibition in the industry and the 2016 Gauteng Expo will again be held at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown, Johannesburg, from 7 – 11 March 2016.

The Youth in Construction initiative is an industry initiative of the SA Forum of Civil Engineering Contractors (SAFCEC), the SA Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE), the Master Builders Association North (MBA North), and Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA) in support of engineering and construction skills required to budget, procure, instruct, maintain and operate infrastructure. It is focused on the importance of the construction industry as a national asset and the critical link to skills development, infrastructure creation and service delivery. The exhibition is targeted at grade 9 - 12 learners as well as tertiary and college students in construction - related learning areas and the importance of maths and science is emphasized.

The exhibition offers stakeholders across the industry the following opportunities: -

  • identify learners to engage in bursaries and study programmes
  • show young learners the diversity of the industry and the best that the industry can offer in skills and opportunities
  • provide role models for business, entrepreneurs and out of school youth
  • give young South Africans hope
  • assist companies in achieving BBBEE targets and industry (CSI/SED)

Awards for Empowerment

CESA YPF would like to honour and congratulate the winners of the CESA Aon Engineering Excellence Award 2015 under young professional’s empowerment categories of Mentor of the Year, Young Engineer of the Year and Mentoring Company of the Year.

In an effort to promote mentorship of young engineers CESA recognises the contribution Mentors make to the industry and the future of the profession. Bigen Africa won the Mentoring Company of the Year category which this year was sponsored by Bosch Holdings. Colin Andrews from Royal HaskoningDHV won the category of Mentor of the Year.

In order to promote the Consulting Engineering industry to young professionals, CESA recognises the contribution young engineers make to the industry and to the future of the profession. Once again, this year the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) sponsored the Young Engineer of the Year Award, enabling the winner to attend the FIDIC Infrastructure Conference which took place in Dubai from 13-15 September 2015. The winner in the category of Young Engineer of the Year is Geoff du Toit from Aurecon with Rudolf Le Roux from ARUP winning commendation.

UWP Consulting was announced the overall winner of the CESA Job Shadow Initiative Poster Competition with Royal HaskoningDHV, Hatch Goba and Infraconsult coming in as 1st, 2nd and 3rd runners-up respectively.
