Its Time – Leadership, volunteerism and giving opportunities to YPs
Recently I attended a dinner and awards to honour those who have contributed to their local community for decades. These individual architects, engineers and quantity surveyors had spent more than 40 years in the industry and in those years, they had given their expertise back to the community. It had been a large contribution and, in my view, an unfair share of the responsibility. The reason being that the generation being honoured, some of whom had passed on, were the first of their community to graduate as professionals in the built environment. Thus, responsibility constantly fell upon them as there was no one else.
To put this into context the stories they shared showed the struggle of their journey during apartheid. Being part of a few of their race who could go to the university, with special consent from the minister at that time. Then graduating only to be frustrated by finding lots of vacancies in the newspaper, but they did not qualify for these due to the colour of their skin.
These stories remind us to be grateful for one being able to study and then having opportunities to get employed and gain experience, and two our communities don’t depend on us as a sole professional representative.
The previous generation had given their time to institute committee facilities and for free. I realised sitting in the crowd, that I and many sitting beside me, had been using these committee facilities for decades. The responsibility is made much lighter as there are many shoulders for it to rest on. Unfortunately, we have not taken over from those who are still carrying the load from the early 90’s!
It’s time we show our gratitude for those who have paved the way. It’s time for us to stand together with them in their efforts. It’s time to pay it forward. Even if it means shadowing the giants until we grow as a collective to fill their shoes. It’s not as big a burden to carry if we do it together.
It all starts with you having a single conversation. Its time you stand up.

The onus rests on leadership to discern the necessary direction required for growth and success. This can truly be achieved through the development and retention of exceptional engineers. Technology, COVID-19, virtual meetings, and globalization have bridged the gap between senior professionals and young professionals like never before. Young professionals in voluntary organizations are successfully managing portfolios and engaging with top level management to achieve predetermined goals and solve complex problems. These characteristics are emphasized through their participation and willingness to take on responsibility. The mandate is clear, identify young professionals that are excelling in the leadership of voluntary organizations and empower them by giving them similar responsibilities within the workplace. The result will reflect our future.
