This month South Africans heard that the country will be faced with rolling black-outs after a 40-metre high coal silo collapsed at Eskom’s Majuba power station in Mpumalanga. Fortunately, the black-outs were short-lived.

Three months ago, a building under renovation in an area southeast of Johannesburg collapsed, killing eight people and, in November last year, the roof of the half-built Tongaat Shopping Mall north of Durban collapsed, killing at least one person and trapping 50 under rubble.

Disasters like these are an engineer’s worst nightmare and being prepared for the unexpected should be a top priority!
