Ian’s strategy methodology helped our group, locally and internationally, to clarify a number of important issues.

During a two-day management program entitled “Scenario Planning: Developing Functional Strategies” by Dr. Ian Mann, the usual approach where an organization’s long-term plan is practically hinged on the unfolding of a single scenario has been challenged. Instead, developing a functional strategy that remains consistent across a range of different scenarios has been shown to offer great value to the organization”.

Strategy that Works is an insightful and practical contribution to the question – ‘what can we do to make organisations both more competitive and better places to work? This excellent new book by Ian Mann one of South Africa’s leading strategy experts succeeds at both these levels. It reflects Ian’s many years of consulting with a diverse array of organisations in several countries. Improving, indeed transforming the practice of management is its aim and this is achieved. It resonates effectively for both practising executives and those who teach strategy at business schools.

The book gives an insightful critical evaluation of contemporary strategy models, their strengths and weaknesses and then offers some practical alternatives. These integrate effectively well-known practices such as scenario planning with a key central big and compelling idea that is difficult for competitors to replicate. It moves beyond the notion of competitive differentiation which he argues competitors can and do eventually also replicate as they strive to catch up with your business.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Ian Mann’s new work. It will add real value to senior executives and business school strategy teachers alike.
