SA needs more Engineers – Protecting Lives and Livelihoods – MATHS is FUN!

To compete globally and develop locally South Africa needs engineers. Engineers are the designers and developers of infrastructure that results in economic growth and job creation. CESA’s award-winning Protecting Lives and Livelihoods campaign, now in its 3rd year, continues to make its mark in promoting the consulting engineering industry to the community at large, the end-users of infrastructure with the latest focus being on encouraging scholars to take STEM subjects in order to enable them to pursue a career in engineering.

Focus on STEM – Maths is Fun!

The importance of STEM subjects is highlighted aimed at changing young people’s perceptions of mathematics and science, and in addition, why English is critical in order to succeed in STEM. Through storytelling the campaign highlights the impact that engineers have on society and the lives of people showcasing their important contribution to society.

Targeting clients and industry stakeholders

At the same time as being focused on raising the voice of consulting engineers to a broader audience, the campaign also targets clients and industry stakeholders through the publication of thought leadership articles aimed at lobbying for change particularly focused on the procurement and regulatory environment. Webinars are also held with guests from stakeholder bodies invited to present on important industry topics aimed at improving the environment in which consulting engineers operate with the ultimate aim of providing the general public with effective service delivery for economic development.

Highlighting the role of Engineers

The main objective of the campaign is to raise the profile of the industry, highlighting the role engineers play in protecting lives and livelihoods by showing the public what a consulting engineer is and the value they bring to society – economic growth and job creation.

This has been achieved through a multi-pronged marketing and communication approach utilizing storytelling through a series of animations; radio adverts aimed at accessing the larger population across the country with a strong focus on digital platforms including social media campaigns. In addition, CESA has collaborated with Protec and supplied them with campaign material for them to disseminate through their educational channels to promote STEM education as a precursor for pursuing careers in the Consulting Engineering industry.

CESA needs Member Firm participation

A CESA Member campaign has been running on social media and we encourage all firms to get involved. This can be done through liking, commenting, and sharing the campaign on social media, attending webinars, and forwarding invitations to staff, as well as encouraging Young Professionals to volunteer.
