Gender Mainstreaming Webinar – Technical Women
We remain committed to enhancing gender diversity in South Africa’s engineering industry – our Gender Mainstreaming Webinar focused on technical women in the industry, and explored how successful women in technical environments can inspire and advance careers.
Hosted on 29 August 2024, Swesha Machere, Engineer at BVi Consulting Engineers, facilitated the session. Our Board Member and Director at Jones & Wagener Engineering and Environmental Consultants, Jabulile Msiza emphasised the importance of creating a solid foundation by building technical expertise before pursuing management roles. She also stressed that there is a need for more women in leadership to advocate for those without a voice, adding that: “At CESA, we’re committed to gender inclusion and transformation.”
Tumisang Gabriel, Senior Technical Principal at SMEC South Africa highlighted the significance of managing diverse environments and the importance of clearly defined technical competence and mentorship. She believes strongly that to “fuel and nurture your passions lead’s to your life’s purpose”, encouraging attendees at the webinar to pursue what excites them to drive innovation.
Lynne Pretorius, Director at ITS, shared her journey in engineering and urged women to become actively involved in their environments, stating, “Often, women sit away from discussions. You must be at the table, lean in, and speak up to drive change.”
The webinar wrapped up with an engaging Q&A session featuring all speakers, who addressed audience questions and provided further insights. Swesha Machere concluded the session, leaving the audience with valuable takeaways on leveraging opportunities and advancing in technical careers.
