A Journey of Insight and Inspiration: Our Experience at the FIDIC Global Infrastructure Conference 2025

By Marizel Pienaar, Jean Gerber, and Uzair Osman (Bosch Projects) – CESA YPF National Exco Committee

When we stepped into the Cape Town International Convention Centre for the FIDIC Global Infrastructure Conference 2025, we knew we were part of something special. The air buzzed with anticipation. Delegates from every corner of the globe gathered under one roof, united by a shared mission: to reimagine infrastructure for a smarter, more sustainable world.

From the very first handshake to the final farewell, the experience was nothing short of transformative. The opening keynote by Trevor Manuel, a civil engineer turned finance minister, struck a chord. He didn’t just speak to us – he challenged us. “If men of science keep to themselves, the public will step up – and Lord help us,” he warned. It was a wake-up call: engineers must be more than technical experts; we must be leaders, advocates, and voices for change.

Throughout the three days, we found ourselves immersed in conversations that stretched far beyond blueprints and budgets. We explored how climate action, ESG principles, and digital transformation are no longer optional – they’re essential. Sessions on AI-driven predictive maintenance and nature-positive design showed us that infrastructure can be intelligent, ethical, and even alive.

In attendance are (front row) Sphume Dlamini (AECOM), Mishqah Hussain (Bosch Projects), Marizel Pienaar (Bigen) and Kgothatso Tshikane (GLS), with (back row) Tinashe Mukalela (Avenir Group), Jean Gerber (Daveng) and Uzair Osman

One moment that stood out was the Future Leaders Management Course presentation. Young professionals from diverse backgrounds came together to discuss climate change, proving that collaboration across cultures isn’t just possible – it’s powerful. Their courage and clarity reminded us that the future of engineering lies in bold ideas and inclusive leadership.

The conference wasn’t just about learning; it was also about connecting. At the Local Colour Night social event, we danced, laughed, and shared stories under the vibrant rhythm of South African culture. It was a celebration of heritage, but also a reminder that cultural exchange strengthens professional bonds.

We also saw the value of including more Young Professionals at this event. Watching them engage with international peers, share ideas, and even spark potential collaborations was inspiring. They brought energy, curiosity, and a fresh perspective – qualities that will shape the future of our industry.

As we left the CTICC, we carried more than just notebooks filled with insights. We carried a renewed sense of purpose. We now see our roles differently – not just as engineers, but as changemakers. We’re committed to integrating sustainability into every project, embracing digital innovation, and stepping into leadership with courage and clarity.
