Practice Notes Webinar Recap: BIM Implementation & Legal Risk Management
We recently hosted two insightful Practice Notes webinars aimed at strengthening members’ technical understanding and professional practice.
PN 101: Basic Implementation of BIM Systems
The first session, held on 16 October 2025, focused on PN 101: Basic Implementation of BIM Systems, featuring Mike Aldous, a registered civil engineer from MPAMOT with more than three decades of experience in pioneering digital delivery on major projects. Aldous provided practical, accessible guidance on Building Information Modelling (BIM), explaining its broader application beyond buildings and offering members a clear introduction to BIM processes, methodologies, and technologies.
Designed for those new to BIM as well as practitioners seeking a refresher, the session emphasised that the Practice Note is not a definitive manual but a foundational resource supported by additional recommended references. Watch the webinar by clicking here.
PN-43: Legal Risk Management
The second webinar, held in November, unpacked PN-43: Legal Risk Management, with expert insights from Sam Varela, Principal Legal Risk Advisor at Aon South Africa. The session addressed key legal and contractual challenges faced in consulting engineering, including professional liability, contractual risk, documentation requirements, and common causes of liability claims.
Members gained practical guidance on implementing effective risk-management practices, maintaining sound record-keeping, and ensuring clarity and consensus in agreements. Together, these two webinars equipped attendees with essential knowledge to strengthen both their technical delivery and their legal resilience in professional practice.
