CESA’s New President David Leukes calls for translating policy into action |
In a media address held in Sandton, north of Johannesburg, this February, our newly appointed President, David Leukes, emphasised the importance of translating policy into action ahead of the South Africa’s State of the Nation Address. With regard to achieving economic growth through sustainable infrastructure, Leukes emphasised the stronger need for collaboration between government entities and the private sector. He called for the implementation of initiatives and leveraging the skills present in the private sector for faster project delivery, improved resource allocation and enhanced overall project outcomes. He also stressed the urgency of addressing the infrastructure backlog in South Africa, which presents further opportunities for job creation, economic stimulation, and improved levels of service related to such infrastructure provisioning. |

He acknowledged the strides made by various government initiatives as highlighted during SONA. “CESA commends the government’s commitment to professionalising the public service, a crucial step towards building an effective state and combating corruption, patronage, and inefficiency. Additionally, CESA recognises the significance of improving the energy, ports, and rail infrastructure, as well as modernising logistics systems.” |

The CESA Infrastructure Indaba, held in Cape Town during March, commenced with a profound call to action for sustainable infrastructure investment, emphasising the urgency of addressing global challenges, as articulated by Dr Nelson Ogunshakin, CEO of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC). Dr. Ogunshakin set the tone by stating, “Globally, the engineering sector is witnessing remarkable developments. We are moving towards integrating sustainable and resilient practices into every facet of our projects.” He highlighted the significant insights unveiled in the recent EY FIDIC report, which outlined the Herculean effort required to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 |

The first day of the Infrastructure Indaba kicked off with fervent discussions, aimed at steering the engineering landscape towards a future of resilience and sustainability. Leaders and experts from various sectors converged to deliberate on pressing issues and chart a course towards robust infrastructure development. One of the key discussions focused on the scarcity of engineers in South Africa. The challenge persists, underscored by terms such as “brain drain,” “mass exodus of engineers,” and the broader “skills shortage,” as outlined by Darren Pillay, Principal Bridge & Structural Engineer at Knight Piésold, during his presentation. |
